BHAWANIPATNA: With severe siltation at the Indravati project raising concerns about the future of irrigation and power generation in Kalahandi, the district administration has taken steps to remove the silt deposits to ensure regular flow of water and increase the holding capacity of the tank. Sources said an investigation has been ongoing for a few days and dredging work will begin this week.

The silt deposit at the intake pit site was assessed to be approximately 3.5 meters deep and the reservoir catchment area is also in an eroded condition with little vegetation cover and constant shifting cultivation. Bauxite mining at Baphlimali is also located close to the shore of the reservoir.

All this contributed to a progressive siltation. According to reports, the tender has been handed over to Odisha Construction Corporation and the silt removal campaign will be carried out with an estimate of 24 crores once the survey is completed. The project includes several vital facilities such as four dams, eight embankments, surge wells, valve house, water pipe system, supply channel, dam on the descent of the Hati River, left and right channel system and elevator irrigation system.

When contacted, Indravati Project Chief Construction Engineer, Anil Kumar Panigrahi said, “The dredging equipment procured from a Kolkata-based company has yet to reach the intake shaft site. The dessilation will start from this week. The services of IIT Madras have also been taken and a high-level team is carrying out the investigation. The work is expected to be completed by June 2024, Panigrahi added.
