Gainwell Engineering and Caterpillar Reach Agreement to Manufacture Underground Mining Equipment

NEW DELHI: Gainwell Engineering Pvt. announced on Monday that it has signed a technology license agreement for underground mining equipment with Caterpillar, the world’s leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines and diesel-electric locomotives.

The agreement will enable Gainwell Engineering to manufacture medium and high-bedded underground chamber and pillar equipment to meet the growing coal production in India and other countries.

Coal remains the mainstay of energy security for India and emerging economies.

As part of the agreement, Gainwell Engineering will also supply aftermarket replacement parts and provide service support to Caterpillar’s existing room and pillar equipment and high wall miners.

Gainwell Engineering is a manufacturing company of Gainwell Commosales Pvt. Ltd, formerly Tractors India.

The company is striving to make India a manufacturing hub.

Gainwell Engineering would set up its manufacturing headquarters in Kolkata with the factory set up on 35 acres in Panagarh, West Bengal with an investment of 500 crore. The unit, when fully developed, will generate over 250 jobs.

It will manufacture certain models of continuous miners, surface haulers, roof racks, excavators/multi-utility vehicles, feed crushers and high wall miners under the Gainwell brand with technology from Caterpillar.

Sunil Kumar Chaturvedi, President and Managing Director of Gainwell Engineering, said, “With the acquisition of the IP license from Caterpillar, our main priority at this stage will be to ensure a seamless transition for our customers as we continue to offer the the innovative products and exceptional support they expect from Caterpillar.”

Commenting on the agreement, Denise Johnson, Group President, Resource Industries, Caterpillar, said, “We are pleased to transfer the Room and Pillar underground mid- and high-seam equipment, as well as the aftermarket licenses, to Gainwell. Engineering. Gainwell will invest in a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in India and supply the products worldwide. Together, Caterpillar and Gainwell will work to ensure a smooth transition.”
