Newmont relinquishes mining claims to maintain environmentally sensitive area in Yukon

DENVER, February 01, 2022–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Newmont Corporation (NYSE:NEM, TSX:NGT) announced an agreement with the Yukon Department of Energy, Mines and Resources (EMR) to relinquish 1,835 quartz mining claims, representing 88,707.5 net mineral acres, in support of Yukon government and First Nation efforts to maintain ecologically sensitive areas associated with the Peel Watershed Regional Land Use Plan (“Peel Watershed Plan”).

“Newmont’s goal is to create value and improve lives through sustainable and responsible mining. We are pleased to honor this goal by divesting these mining claims in support of broader environmental goals,” said Tom Palmer, President and CEO. “We support the Peel River Watershed Plan and are doing our part to maintain this sensitive area. I commend all parties in their joint efforts to protect the Peel River watershed.

“We are working with First Nations to implement the Peel Watershed Regional Land Use Plan that reflects our shared values,” said John Streicker, Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources. “We are excited to see this next step come to fruition. I would like to thank Newmont for making this land grant and helping to protect Peel.

In 2019, the Peel Plan was approved by the Government of Yukon and Yukon First Nations, including the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in, Na-Cho Nyäk Dun First Nation, Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation and Tribal Council of the Gwich’in. The plan provides direction for land and resource management in the Peel watershed. Historical exploration of the claims by Newmont has indicated that there is potential for copper and gold mineralization. However, the company has not actively explored the area given the Peel watershed plan and is now surrendering these leases in support of broader community goals.

Newmont continues to work collaboratively with the Government of Yukon, Canada and First Nations to advance the development of the Coffee Mine Project. The Newmont Coffee Mine Project is a proposed open pit gold development and heap leach project located in west central Yukon, and is currently going through the Yukon environmental and socio-economic assessment.
