Spilled oil disposal start-up wins Macau’s first innovation and entrepreneurship competition for companies in Brazil and Portugal

Biosolvit, a startup that has developed a product to absorb petroleum derivatives on land or at sea, won first prize in the first innovation and entrepreneurship competition (Macao) for technology companies from Brazil and Portugal that s ‘is held yesterday (Friday).

Organized by the Economic and Technological Development Office (DSEDT) in cooperation with the local public incubator Macao Young Entrepreneur Incubation Center, the competition is another attempt to promote Macau’s role as a platform between China and the countries Portuguese speakers, this time in the area of ​​technological innovation.

A total of 20 projects were recommended for participation by eight incubators and higher education institutions from Portugal and Brazil, with a 10-minute online presentation and panel question-and-answer session held for each of the projects. during the final phase of the competition, with part of the event being held at the Banyan Tree Hotel.

Most of the companies were involved in innovative solutions in areas such as great health, green environmental protection and artificial intelligence with a jury of 10 experts – including investors, financial institutions, researchers and tech entrepreneurs – selecting the winners of the top five awards.

The champion went to Biosolvit from Portugal, the first finalist NURISE (Portugal) and the second finalist RYAPURTECH (Portugal).

The winners received respectively 100,000 MOP, 80,000 MOP and 50,000 MOP as monetary prizes and the corresponding certificates.

On the other hand, BIOO (Brazil) won the “Prize for the greatest development potential in the Grande Baie region” and Pocket Clinic (Brazil) won the “Prize for the greatest potential for technological value transfer”.

The winner of the first prize, the biotechnology startup Biosolvit, has developed a natural absorber, named Bioblue, which uses the biomass rejected as raw material to absorb petroleum derivatives on land or at sea, thus reducing the risk of contamination and waste. .

Biosolvit was founded in 2017 in Brazil by Guilhermo Pinheiro de Queiroz, with the aim of carrying out research and development activities for new materials using plant fibers rejected in the production process of canned palm hearts.

With several awards and new products, the company decided to move to Portugal to develop other products, presenting itself as a Portuguese startup in this competition which it won with its Bioblue product.

“Bioblue was born out of the market’s need for 100% green and sustainable products to solve environmental problems produced by unsustainable companies, thereby helping marine life and the environment. The market covered by Bioblue is extremely large, so it gives us the opportunity to offer our products to refineries, steel mills, mining companies, gas stations, among others, ”the company said.

The product was launched at the Offshore Technology Conference in Houston, USA in August and is already on sale in the international market.

One of the expert judges of the competition, Agalai Kong – CEO and founder of technology group LeapFive – told the Macau News Agency that one of the main aspects she looked for when evaluating competing companies was their contribution to “green” and sustainable development.

“With global warming causing such rapid changes in our environment, I was looking for companies that could create better sources of energy or harness current sources of energy to help reduce the carbon footprint. Also, companies that could help create technologies that could better preserve our environment, ”Kong told MNA.

“Other concerns were about technologies that could help improve the health of our aging populations.”

As a former CTO of Google Enterprise Networks and Google Cloud Office, she is very familiar with another world famous ‘Bay Area’, the San Francisco Bay Area, having worked in Silicon Valley for many years. .

For our Bay Area, we should repeat the same pattern and see how to attract global talent that can help us. However, when it comes to funding, we have a lot more! she added.

Several of the participants in this year’s competition had already had the chance to visit the GBA and Hengqin during previous initiatives by SAR authorities, including Luis Monteiro, one of the founders of NU-RISE, a Portuguese startup focused on surveillance of X-ray radiation which won the second prize in the competition.

Founded at the University of Aveiro, NURISE hopes to reduce health risks by helping to control radiation levels in x-rays.

“We help others deliver precise radiation therapy by providing real-time data. This means that we measure the amount of radiation received by the level and use our data to compare it so that we immediately know when there is a gap and let doctors know, ”Monteiro told Macau Business.

“We are in the scale-up phase, we are close to the market and have initiated the regulatory process in the United States with the FDA. At the moment, we identify three main markets, Europe, the United States and Asia. Our presence in Macau was previously a way to assess how we can approach the market and identify industrial and clinical partners.

The Portuguese startup has worked with key hospital institutions in Europe to obtain the clinical data needed for regulatory processes and plans to do the same in the United States and plans to do the same in Macau or the GBA.

DSEDT Director Tai Kin Ip expressed in his speech during the competition that he hoped the competition would help uncover more technological innovation projects from Brazil and Portugal that demonstrated originality and market potential.

“We hope this can also help Macao become a bridgehead for their implementation and development in the region and help companies in Brazil and Portugal to access the mainland Chinese market. In this way, while promoting technological exchanges and cooperation, Macao could also moderately diversify its economic development, ”he noted.

According to the director of the DSEDT, the objective would then be in line with the intentions of the 14th national five-year plan to implement a development strategy based on innovation and to define a clear objective of making the Grande Baie region an international hub. innovation and technology.

At the same time, the newly established Guangdong-Macao Deep Cooperation Zone in Hengqin will provide better resources and greater flexibility for Macao to develop its science and technology industry.

“If conditions allow, we would like to invite participating teams to come to Macau and the GBA to directly contact potential investors or partners in the local market. This is one of the rarest angles for scientific and technological cooperation between the two parties, ”Tai added.
