Women miners lead the way

CMEWA CEO Paul Everingham said the award winners represent an extremely broad cross-section of WA’s mining and resources community.

“Every year, WIRA shines a light on exceptionally inspiring stories – and 2022 is no different,” he said.

“Although our winners all have different stories and backgrounds, the one attribute they share is that they are all leaders in one form or another.”

Winners for 2022 include:

  • Kim Tan, an engineer at BHP, who won the Women in Resources Technology Innovation Award;
  • Shell technician Madeline Deppeler, who won the Outstanding Operator category;
  • Newmont corporate attorney Elle Farris, who won Outstanding Young Woman in the Resources category;
  • Tianqi Superintendent Kathy Lewi was named Outstanding Resource Woman;
  • BHP Vice President of Warehousing, Marie Bourgoin, crowned Women in Resources Champion; and
  • Director of Rig Technologies, Sravani Mukkisa, who received the People’s Choice Award.

Tan has developed a remote controlled thermal lance loader to reduce blockages in the crusher, which is used by BHP and others in the industry.

Farris is a pioneer in the increased involvement and participation of women in mining and leads the legal team at Newmont.

Lewi has worked in the mining industry for 35 years and leads a team of 80 people at the Tianqi Lithium Hydroxide Refinery in Kwinana.

Everingham said that as the sector strives to increase diversity and continue on its path to equality, the winners of WIRA 2022 have shown that the future of Australia’s mining and resources sector- Occidentale was in very good hands.
“By recognizing and celebrating not only our winners but also all of our finalists, I hope we can highlight the wide range of jobs, career paths and opportunities available to women in our sector” , did he declare.
