Zijin Mining: helps Serbia to improve the ecological environment of the natural water supply system

Zijin News On February 7, Serbia Zijin Copper launched the Bor River Comprehensive Environmental Treatment Project. Improvements are expected in the safe operation of tailings ponds andpit once the project is complete. The ecological environment of the natural water system of the Bor River and the lower reaches of the Timok River will also be improved, which will bring great benefits to the protection of the ecological environment and to society as a whole.

These three rivers all belong to the same hydrographic system. The Krivelj River is an upper tributary of the Bor River which flows into the Timok River. The project will construct a sewage reservoir to collect, treat and recycle municipal wastewater and divert the relatively uncontaminated Krivelj River to the historically polluted Bor River. A new clear water reservoir and tourism corridor in the lower reaches of the Bor River will also be built to create a tailor-made tourism and recreation area, the so-called “one river and two banks” for the citizens of Bor. and the neighboring villages, Bor with the ecological reputation of “Green Mine, Beautiful City”.

Located in eastern Serbia, Bor has always been known as a typical resource-based town. Since 1903, when copper mining became commercial, Bor has been on the fast track of development. However, due to a lack of advanced technical equipment and good management, the Bor mine was once on the verge of bankruptcy and fell into debt with serious environmental problems. In December 2018, Zijin signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the Serbian government, which marks the start of life-changing changes at the Bor copper mine in just a few months. As Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has noted, Zijin has given this age-old mine “new life”. “The Zijin project is a model of Serbian investment…I will express my respect and thanks to the Chinese government with the best wording.”

Zijin Bor Copper Mine insists on building a “garden mine” and carries out vigorous rehabilitation. Afforestation of all tailings ponds, openpits and some abandoned landfill slopes have also been completed. In total, he planted over 60,000 seedlings, adding an additional 350,000 square meters of green space. The mine has had a facelift. The project also takes multiple initiatives to reduce and control dust, solid waste, sewage and waste gas, which has shown remarkable results.
